When deaf Catholics enter the
confessional, they are oblige to confess all sins, and
therefore, as far as they can remember, the number of times they have
committed them
and confess to a valid RC priest (male), who is a mediator between God
and themselves.
Some would like to use sign language or wears hearing aids to
communicate.
As they already know, the Church will continue to be sound based when
deaf and hard of hearing people enter the confessional, so how do they
confess?
With respect to tradition, some parishes have grilles in the
confessional making it difficult for deaf and hard of hearing people to
confess to a priest.
It can be resolved by other alternatives, like allowing deaf and hard of
hearing people to make an appointment to see a priest and offer to make
the confessional more accessible.
Deaf Catholics could use pen and pad and give priests their messages
through a slot.
They could have a light switch telling their priests that they are deaf
or hard of hearing and need to either lip-read or sign.
Some deaf Catholics would prefer to confess their sins kneeling with a
priest facing them and receive absolution this way.
Although, there are chaplains for deaf and hard of hearing people, not
all are able to travel far. Local parishes with deaf participants will
have to adjust to their needs when receiving this Sacrament of Penance.
There are endless possibilities but all should be done with respect and
devotion as Our Lord
gave them the first great commandment:
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength."
