Communication

We are looking for practicing RC signers who have completed all three level in BSL (British Sign Language) with receptive, productive skills with knowledge, experience and background for communicating and translating at various meetings and events for BSL users especially for the Sacraments of the Church.

RC priests visiting sick people in some hospitals have policies emphasising that patients using sign language must have signers with BSL level three for consultation with doctors.

Hospitals can pay for a level three communicator with
liturgical sign language for RC priests.

By law, only signers with BSL level three can be used for marriages conduced by RC priests.

Levels in BSL:

  • Level 1 - Beginners need to understand that when they've passed level one, they are NOT using fluent BSL.

  • Level 2 - Intermediate signers uses Sign Support English.

  • Level 3 - Advanced signers/communicators becomes competent to communicate with deaf people.

  • Level 4 - Interpreters.

RC signers at each level are welcome to contact us to find out what they can offer to the service.

RC Liturgical Sign Language

We can teach RC liturgical sign language for the seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church to signers with BSL level two and above.

This sign language is generally lay Catholics reading the Lectionary and the Sacramentary for priests. It is usually used for communication too.

Because BSL are being developed by non-Catholics presently, RC liturgical sign language support and understand the language of the Catholic Church.

Makaton

Makaton signers can be taught to use liturgical sign language although it is generally, used for hearing people with learning difficulties, deaf participants can understand most of the basic signs. The award-winning BBC TV series Something Special uses Makaton symbols and signs, as well as rhymes and songs, to help encourage communication and develop language in a fun and exciting way.
